Founded in 1922, the museum’s permanent collection includes icons of the XIII-XVII centuries, works by eighteenth-century portraitists Volodymyr Borovykovsky and Dmytro Levytsky, Ukrainian and Russian realist and modernist artists such as Ivan Aivazovsky, Mykola Ge, Ivan Shyshkin, Ilya Repin, Mikhail Vrubel, Mikhail Nesterov, and Serhiy Korovin, a total of more than 14 thousand works of fine art. The National Museum of the Kyiv Art Gallery is also actively working on exhibitions of contemporary fine art, including within the framework of international projects. The museum did not cease this part of its activities after the outbreak of the full-scale Russian Ukrainian war, despite the damage to the facade and broken windows after a missile attack in October 2022. Exhibitions of contemporary art are usually held in the halls on the first floor of the building, and 2-3 exhibition projects can be available to visitors at the same time.
The website of the Kyiv National Art Gallery has Ukrainian and English versions, as well as a special viewing mode for the visually impaired.
